What does a bass setup aim to improve?
A bass setup aims to make the instrument play comfortably and consistently with the strings, tuning and technique you use. Assessment can include relief, action, intonation and hardware. The final settings should serve the player rather than a universal minimum string height.
Favaran’s standard bass setup labour guide is $105–$120 CAD. Strings and parts may cost extra, and a separate repair can change the scope. See the bass repair catalogue and current prices before comparing quotes.
Explain your technique and preferred feel
Tell the technician whether you play fingerstyle, with a pick, or with a strong slap attack. Mention the tuning and whether you want an easy light touch or more room for aggressive playing. These are practical details that help establish a suitable target.
If you play both lightly and heavily, identify which situations matter most. A sound acceptable unplugged may not be what you want through your rig. Bring examples of where notes buzz, choke or feel difficult rather than asking only for “low action.”
Keep strings and tuning part of the plan
Mention the string set already fitted and any change you are planning. A technician needs to evaluate the instrument in the condition you intend to play it. A switch in gauge, string type or tuning can make previous settings less suitable.
Fender’s bass setup guidance is specific to its instruments and factory equipment; it should not be treated as a specification for every bass. Ask for model-appropriate checks if the instrument has unusual hardware, previous modifications or extra strings.
Separate setup issues from repairs
Uneven or worn frets, a damaged nut and an electrical fault are not all corrected through ordinary adjustment. A setup inspection can reveal that another job is needed. Ask the workshop to identify it and confirm the additional work before proceeding.
On a fretless bass, fingerboard condition matters instead of fret wear. Favaran lists fretless bass work separately. Describe whether the problem affects a particular position, string or playing technique so the assessment starts with useful evidence.
Arrange a workshop visit or GTA pickup
Send the bass type, model if known, strings, tuning and a short symptom description through the estimate form. Mention any gig or recording deadline, along with visible damage or a fault that only happens intermittently.
Favaran’s workshop is near Davisville & Yonge, with visits by appointment and GTA pickup/drop-off available by arrangement. Confirm the appointment, transport details and work scope in the reply before bringing the instrument. A setup booking is not a promise that a separate repair can be completed on the same schedule.
